Osprey eggs are about to hatch! There are currently three pairs of Osprey nesting on the platforms located at the north end of Alum Creek along Hogback Road. Venture out to see these large fish-eating birds of prey who boast a wingspan of almost 5 feet.
The mated pairs work as a team to raise their hatchlings, who mature throughout the summer and migrate in late August. Watch drama unfold as Osprey fish food from the open water, take turns feeding and babysitting their young, and interact with other impressive birds who take advantage of the fish-filled waters of Alum Creek as part of their habitat.
Watching from the cliff offers an advantageous view from above and is nicknamed the Osprey Overlook. Bring your binoculars or a spotting scope to see into the nest or scan the tree line where Osprey may perch. You can park your car next to the overlook or carefully park along the numerous shallow pull-offs along Hogback Road.
For even more adventure, park your car at Hogback Ridge Park and hike to the overlook. It takes about 20 minutes to hike to the Osprey overlook area from Hogback Ridge Park. Take the Woodland Ridge Trail halfway around and connect to the Alum Creek Equestrian Trail. Follow the pink tree blazes or ribbons leading west. This horse trail is rugged, steep, wet, and totally worth the trip. Ospreys are waiting!
