Gallant Farm History

Step back in time with a visit to Gallant Farm at 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road, north of Delaware. The 19-acre property, which was purchased in 2003 with funding from the Clean Ohio Greenspace Program, includes a farmhouse with period furnishings, a historic barn, a granary, an equipment shed, crop fields, a vegetable garden, livestock, and a pond.

Visitors may encounter costumed interpreters completing their daily chores—plowing the fields, tending the garden, or cooking on a wood-burning stove. Staff-led programs transport visitors to a bygone era.

But, while Gallant Farm appears to be a well-kept relic from the 1930s, it is a representation of a Depression-era farm and the farmhouse is a well-designed replica of a pre-World War II home with modern accessibility and construction.

Development of the farmstead began with a driveway, parking lot, pond, and trails in 2007, followed by a windmill in 2008 and the planting of heirloom apple trees two years later in 2010. In 2011, construction began on the farmhouse, granary, sheds, and outhouse, eventually becoming the homestead we see today. The farmhouse was furnished with donations from Charlotte Gallant, who also generously donated 83 acres of Gallant Woods Park, just across the road from the farm.

Another prominent addition to Gallant Farm arrived during this time: a historic barn from the Chicago 1893 World’s Fair, which was moved and carefully reconstructed using historically accurate methods. With the core of the farmstead now completed, Gallant Farm Park officially opened to the public in 2012.

Further additions to Gallant Farm include the installation of pasture fencing, a hayloft, and fishing pier used for programming. The first sheep arrived at Gallant Farm in 2017 and hogs arrived in 2019. The construction of a corn crib in 2020 made way for the introduction of two cows in 2021. The most recent additions to the farm include granary overhangs constructed in 2022 and a smokehouse in 2023. These newest additions allow for guests to take a deeper dive into life in the 1930s.

Gallant Farm continues to operate as a historic, Depression-era farm, with daily chores and renovations using historically accurate methods. This vibrant time capsule of rural living serves as a reminder of how life was in Delaware County before the advent of our modern, digital society.
